GEO4CIVHIC Project kicked off meeting in Padova

In the period 12-13 April 2018 was organized the Kick off meeting for the GEOCIVHIC EU project at the Department of GeoSciences, University of Padua (Italy).
In the GEOCIVHIC EU project are involved 19 project partners, including the coordinator of the project- CONSIGLIO NAZIONALE DELLE RICERCHE (CNR) and Work’s as partner.
At the meeting participated Daniel Marave De Lemus, EC Project Officer and all the partners involved presented the project and discussed about the work, objectives and expected outputs for all the 8 work packages.
The project, titled ‘Most Easy, Efficient and Low Cost Geothermal Systems for Retrofitting Civil and Historical Buildings – GEO4CIVHIC’, funded by the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020, call LCE-2016-2017, under Competitive Low-Carbon Energy, falls into this challenge as it aims at applying a pan-European and innovative shallow geothermal solutions particularly targeting historical buildings.

The cost and efficiency of existing geothermal systems, mostly based on vertical wells, to provide heating and cooling in buildings being retrofitted or renovated are not very competitive in particular when digging is difficult. The challenge is to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness and efficiency of geothermal systems for heating and cooling in individual installations being retrofitted.
The main objectives will be:
• identify and where missing develop building blocks solutions in drilling (machines and methods), GSHE types, heat pumps and other renewable energy/storage technologies, heating and cooling terminals with the focus on every type of built environment, civil and historical;
• generate and demonstrate the most easy to install and cost-effective geothermal energy solutions using an improving existing and new tools.
In the area of shallow geothermy of further innovations are needed to provide a pan – European solution base for all the parameter combinations. More efficient borehole heat exchangers and lower cost drilling methodologies/ machines adapted to the built environment will be realised as improvement or innovation related to the previous projects. This approach will bring to a easy applicability in the building refurbishment presenting different constrains, to reduce the overall drilling cost in the given geological conditions, will to avoid replacement of heating terminals constructing modular high temperature heat pumps and hence to reduce the deep retrofit costs. The association with tools (DSS, APPs, etc.) will enable to find the best solution for each combination of building type/climate/geology.
Moreover, the design tools will reduce overall engineering costs, avoid design mistakes and form the basis for a major dissemination effort. Application tools will help the users for different practical aspects.
Finally to help knowledge dissemination and formations of the future experts a pan – European network of centres of excellence based on past expertise but complemented with the new developments should become instrumental in breaking down the barriers in shallow geothermal energy in building renovation.
The GEO4CIVHIC project focuses on existing buildings, both single user and multi-user with centralized and decentralized solutions. Different building types (size, residential and non-residential), several climates and different geological conditions will be used to define the cost and efficiency of the overall geothermal system with different levels of retrofit solutions.
